Young Arunachal needs balanced development: Dalai Lama

Weeklong visit culminates in Itanagar

ITANAGAR, Nov 14: Arunachal is a young state that needs balancing material and spiritual development, said His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. Because of one sided development, there have been untold sufferings in societies across the world and that state should learn so that such mistakes are not repeated. Spiritual and material development must go together to avoid sufferings in the world, he said.

He was addressing the citizens at Banquet Hall while wrapping up his weeklong visit to the state.

He further said that India who taught the world ahimsa, religious harmony needs to reassert these teachings. Instead of just concentrating on western education undermining the old values, India should look back at these glorious teachings and lead by example, he said while adding that India and Tibetan have relations that date back to centuries.

Expressing his sadness at the division based on religious beliefs, he said that tolerance, compassion and forgiveness were the true essence of all religions and promoting harmony on the basis of mutual understandings should be the main idea among all religious sects.

My aim is help build a happy human society with self- confidence and strength with a compassionate heart in all human beings,'' he said while advocating religious harmony and compassionate society.

“Need of the hour is respect for each other’s differences No one wants suffering and every one has equal right to lead happy life”, he added.

20th century saw bloodshed but 21st century should be century of peace he said.

Earlier on the Dalai Lama visited the Theraveda Buddha Vihar at Vivek Vihar belonging to the Hinayana Sect of Buddhism where he was given a rousing reception.  He called on gathering to follow the path of truth and non-violence.

For the people of the state, the visit of His Holiness, who is revered in the state, was long awaited. Last year, the visit to Arunachal was called off following mounting international pressure.

The weeklong visit saw Dalai Lama giving religious discourse to some forty thousand devotees at Tawang followed by visit to Dirang, Bomdila, and Kalaktang and finally to Itanagar.

BOMDILA: This morning at the Gaden Rabgyeling Monastery, Upper Gonpa, to commemorate the Children’s Day, His Holiness addressed the school children and teachers. Exhorting the teachers to play a positive role in shaping and securing the future of the children,

His Holiness observed that the future belongs to them. Let the 21st century be a period of love, compassion and non-violence. Do away with hatred and jealousy and let the universal brotherhood ness topped with religious tolerance flourish, said the Dalai Lama before leaving for Itanagar via Kalaktang; where he stopped over for a short duration.

Meanwhile, terming India as the torch bearer of peace, non-violence, and religious tolerance, the Tibetan Spiritual Guru His Holiness the XIVth Dalai Lama, on his 3-days official visit to the district reiterated that, if world peace and mutual co-existence is to be established, only India could do as the country has been the cradle for various religions symbolizing peace, compassion and non-violence. After the long life initiation and offering of long life ceremony, the Dalai Lama, addressing the mammoth gathering of over ten thousand people from all walks of life here at Buddha Stadium impressed that, in addition to the infrastructural and materialistic development taking place all over, the sentient beings need to develop and purify one’s inner self, thought, expression and deeds, which in the long run would determine the validity and rationality of one’s existence in this world, reports DIPRO West Kameng.

Max mart under scanner

Taba Ajum

ITANAGAR, Nov 14: At a time when people of north-east, particularly women are facing discrimination in places like New Delhi, the women of this tribal state are also allegedly facing some kind of discrimination in their own backyard.

Max Mart, the leading retail outlet located in Naharlagun has come under scanner with women protesting about their handbags being taken away at the entrance.  It is usual in any shopping mall or retail outlet, for security personnel to bar carrying of plastic bags, knapsacks, etc inside, but in most cases ladies handbags are allowed. Some of the women, who had visited Max Mart recently, felt that their privacy was being breached as they carry personal items in their handbags.

Recently a woman who encountered similar situation, recalls that moment, “I have visited many retail outlets and malls all over India but was never asked to surrender my handbag at the entrance. At Max Mart, they asked me to handover my handbag and I refused them straightway.” She further told, “When I confronted them, they told that to avoid shoplifting incidents, handbags are not allowed inside. I didn’t budge and even took the matter to store manager.”

One wonders how people can carry items from shop when their handbags are strictly checked when they are leaving store. While there are many other popular stores in town which are also visited in large number by public but such kind of imposition have not been witnessed. The authorities at Max Mart have justified the ban of ladies handbag stating that it is done for betterment of public.

Talking to this daily Praveen Mishra, manager of Max Mart told, “We fully respect the privacy of women but there has been unfortunate cases of shoplifting in the past. Keeping that in mind, we have banned carrying of ladies handbag inside.” He further informed that they have specially set up a baggage counter at entrance to help general public. “We want our customers to have hassle-free shopping experience. Some customers don’t like to carry even handbags, so we provide shopping trailers to them,” said Mishra. He went to add, “As some women have complained about this, so in near future we will let them carry their handbags inside the shop but have to check them appropriately. After all we have started this retail outlet for the people of this state.”Si-Donyi
